Palmerton is a borough in lower Carbon County, Pennsylvania and is part of the Lehigh Valley. It has a population of 5,306 people and is located in Pennsylvania’s Coal Region. It lies north of the junction of the Lehigh River and Aquashicola Creek and is also north of Lehigh Gap via Blue Mountain. The borough is located 3 miles east of Bowmanstown and 7 miles southeast of Lehighton.

The town of Palmerton is rich in history and was once inhabited by Native Americans and early European settlers as well as part of the Underground Railroad. It was incorporated in 1912 when New Jersey Zinc Company located their zinc smelting operation there to take advantage of the town’s plentiful anthracite coal as well as its proximity to the zinc mines in Franklin, New Jersey. The town was then named after New Jersey Zinc Company’s president at the time, Stephen S. Palmer.

Even though, zinc smelting was prevalent in Palmerton and New Jersey Zinc Company was a major employer in the area, several garment manufacturing shops popped up in the town as well.

Today, Palmerton is home to residential neighborhoods and a variety of businesses, including Blue Mountain Resort and New Jersey Zinc Company’s East Plant running at limited operation.
