Let’s talk about Human Capital. What is it? Human capital is defined in the Oxford English Dictionary as “the skills the labor force possesses and is regarded as a resource or asset.” As a business owner, the success of your organization depends upon the work productivity of your staff. So, when you have employees who feel valued and cared for, they will be happy and business is good. Take the time to assess your human capital just as you would every other part of the business. Investing in people is just as important as investing in equipment or upgrading technology.

I often hear “It’s so difficult to find good people.”  Employers search far and wide for employees who have a good work ethic and positive attitude in addition to skills, experience and knowledge they can bring to the table. So once you find talented people, take good care them!

Dedicate time with your staff by having one-on-one meetings to discuss shared future goals and individual aspirations. It’s important to stay connected with employees and encourage company-focused discussions. Being a part of the plan for business growth will foster teamwork  and new ideas.  Don’t forget to have fun! Work environments can be intense, find ways to make the job fun or take time to have some fun. The age-old saying “laughter is the best medicine” can fit well in the work environment.

In today’s world, we all multi-task, take on additional projects; attend early morning meetings and late night events. Take the time to say “thank you” to your employees who go above and beyond the call of duty.

Simple ways to appreciate your staff:

-Treat staff to breakfast or lunch, or even a good cup of coffee
-Give a hand written thank you note
-Say “thank you” for a task well done
-Give some special time off; extra vacation days or a few extra hours during the week
-Work with staff who need flex time for family matters
-Recognize personal accomplishments – e.g. volunteering, giving blood, running a marathon
-Encourage career growth by allowing staff to attend training programs
-Give away tickets to a movie, dinner, play or sporting  event
-Have a team building day with your staff; e.g. do an outdoor activity together such as white water rafting
-Provide some type of “health and wellness” program; in the long run, this will benefit your company financially if your employees are healthy
-Encourage your employees to attend our “Wellness in the Workplace Expo”…
-Join the Carbon Chamber and Economic Development Corporation on Wednesday April 24th for a “Wellness in the Workplace Expo” honoring Administrative Professionals Day. Explore ways to be you best self at work and in life! Gifts and door prizes will be given away as well.  Say “thank you” to your staff!

In closing, take good care of your employees just as you would an expensive piece of equipment … they are a bit more precious and valuable to your organization.
